Nature Coast Fishing

People from around the world visit the Nature Coast to see and swim with manatees on their trips. However the natural beauty and fantastic fishing is what keeps them coming back year after year. Depending on the season anglers can catch bonita, bluefish, grouper, jack crevalle, redfish, sharks, sheepshead, snapper, speckled trout, snook, and tarpon. And the diversity of wildlife beginning at the numerous freshwater springs, along the creeks, down the rivers, through the mangroves, across the turtle grass, and out into the Gulf of Mexico is like no other place in the world.

Homosassa Tarpon on Fly

It is no secret amongst legendary tarpon guides and world record seeking tarpon fly anglers that Homosassa is the home of the largest tarpon to swim the Gulf of Mexico. And though there aren't as many as there once was, there are still plenty enough to make once as good as it may ever be. Add that fly fishing for tarpon at Homosassa is much more dynamic than the sit and wait method typical along the Florida Keys makes fly fishing for Homosassa tarpon something every fly angler should experience. May-June is the season.

Scalloping Trips

Every year around the Fourth of July the season for recreational harvesting of bay scallops opens for Citrus County and hundreds of boats head out to the turtle grass flats with snorkeling equipment to hunt for bay scallops. This is truly a recreational activity because commercial harvesting and/or sales of bay scallops is illegal. Many families make this an annual event because it's fun for all ages, and many of younger kids fall asleep before returning to the dock. The season runs from around the beginning of July through the middle of September. Some people like to go early in the season to be part of the crowd, some like to wait and go later to avoid the crowd, and others like to wait towards the end to harvest the larger scallops that tend to arrive later. But no matter when you go the relaxation from snorkeling in clear water, and seeing the diversity of marine wildlife along the Nature Coast is worth the trip.
