Meet The Captain

Captain Mike Sorrel was born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana. His father was an electrical contractor, cattle rancher, dairyman, sugar cane farmer, Iberia Parish police juror, and avid outdoorsman. His mother survived raising five boys and one girl so Mike could arrive by accident six years later. As the baby, caboose, toot-toot, or any of the other names the youngest child was called in Cajun country, Captain Mike spent almost all of his free time fishing and hunting with his father and/or one of his brothers while growing up.

Like many from South Louisiana Mike went to work in the oilfield after high school, but quit after three years to attend Georgia Tech in Atlanta for mechanical engineering. After getting his Mechanical Engineering degree Mike worked as an engineer, and then project management based out of Atlanta. While doing projects primarily at power plants and paper mills across North America, Captain Mike took advantage of his travel to fish wherever he went. From California to Maine, and Canada to Mexico, Captain Mike has fished all the coasts and many lakes and rivers in-between.

While his children attended college in Florida, Mike relocated to Lake Mary, Florida in 2012 and fished the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, Homosassa, Marathon, and Flamingo areas on a regular basis. However Homosassa and the Nature Coast of Citrus County quickly became Captain Mike’s favorite, so when the opportunity to move to Citrus County came in 2016 Mike didn’t hesitate to move, obtain his USCG merchant mariner credentials and start guiding in summer 2017..
